When this article was first written, we were in isolation, and the irony of feeling more connected while physically apart was not lost on us. Now in 2025, hybrid working and digital collaboration remain our norm, and the need for genuine human connection has never been greater.

Connection in modern work

Connection is more than communication. It is the feeling of being seen, heard, and valued. In workplaces where people feel truly connected, collaboration flows naturally. When it is missing, even the best strategies fall flat.

Connection is a core human need.

Neuroscience tells us that belonging triggers the same reward centres in the brain as food or safety. Teams that feel connected are more collaborative, creative, and resilient under pressure.

Gallup’s data consistently shows that employees who feel a strong sense of belonging are more than 50 percent less likely to leave their role. Connection isn’t a “nice to have,”  it’s the social glue that holds performance together.

As managers, we need to move beyond transactional check-ins. Ask:

  • Do people feel they belong here?
  • Do I understand how my team members like to communicate and recharge?
  • Are my one-to-ones about outcomes only, or about people too?

In an age of digital overload, sometimes the bravest thing a manager can do is to pause and listen.

Using the Lupa Lens: Understand

At Alpha Lupa, connection sits at the heart of the Understand phase of the LUPA Method. To understand, you must listen deeply.

Encourage curiosity in how your team interacts. Run an exercise where everyone shares their preferred working style or “communication language.” It builds awareness, empathy and understanding – the foundation for connection.

A reflection for 2025

We have never had more tools to connect, yet loneliness and disconnection remain high. Many organisations are realising that “together in the office” does not automatically mean “connected as a team.”

Connection is emotional, not logistical.
