Well, it’s been a while since I have written one of these…
For those that have been following NMIOB since the beginning, I used to do a wrap up each month as to what had been going on in my life and in the world of NMIOB. It’s been 18 months since I’ve written one, so it’s safe to say that I had fallen out of the habit of doing it.
You see, as NMIOB has grown, the team has grown and priorities have changed.
I was doing a guest lecture yesterday at a university on how to review strategies and one of the students asked what is the difference between a vision and mission. I dutifully started to explain but as I was talking her through it, it came to me that my vision and mission have been doing a dance over the last year, I found myself talking about the ethereal and the practical and how we should evolve.
Where I started out with a simple vision of No More Ifs Or Buts being the coaching provider of the events industry, with a clear objective of simply paying my mortgage each month…
This has somewhat developed into a fully-fledged coaching and development business working for creative businesses, from their entry level apprentices, right the way up to supporting business owners on their exit strategies through M&A. Not only that, I have also launched Stress Matters, become a board member of EventWell and now spend at least one day a week talking about the importance of stress and wellbeing management at panel sessions, conferences and offices around the UK.
Progress has been fun, it has been fluid and it has been fast.
I’ve been watching Mars recently on Netflix, it looks at Elon Musk’s vision of space travel developing and what could be happen in our lifetime. It’s not just the vision that is inspirational to me, it’s the concept of progress that enthrals me. Being in limbo and feeling stagnant, that sense of routine and calm don’t sit easily with me. I have to be moving, I have to feel like every day, not only have I learnt something new but that NMIOB is doing that much more for our clients every day.
I’m not visionary but I’m determined so my vision and mission will always be difficult to unwind and will constantly develop. As I learn more about myself and more from the people I work with, my vision gets re-set, my mission shifts and so to the student I spoke to yesterday, your question is more complex, it’s down to the leaders, that’s where it all starts, that is what I should have told you.
Reflect. Be self-aware. That’s what we tell our clients. When you become more self-aware, you can be a better employee, a better manager, a better leader. However much progress is being made, however fast that pace, there is always time to reflect. It can take 10 seconds, it can take 10 minutes. I help people to reflect everyday and the power of it is incredible.
So I raise a cup of tea to getting back into the habit of reflecting, ensuring my priorities match what is important to me at that time. In trusting myself that I am a solid enough leader that even if they change, they are changing for a reason and that progress is what we are all here for. In fact, scrap the tea, that’s a lot to toast, let’s crack open the champagne…
No More Ifs Or Buts.

As an experienced board member and Managing Director, our founder, Laura Capell-Abra knew that the day to day fire-fighting of running a business often over-took the need to look to the future. No More Ifs or Buts was developed to help businesses create a culture of continuous development.
